Playing a character is really a defence mechanism, we humans have used it quite effectively as a survival strategy over time to prevent ourselves from rejection, other physical and emotional harms that we may suffer from otherwise undesirable exposure. However for me the most sad form of playing a character is that arises from self rejection, such playing of character is least likely to yield any positive results, it’s really destructive in nature.
Playing a character has also its fun and creative uses such as such as film &drama. One of the most practical uses of playing a character that I have found is”act confident till you become confident”. Only through engaging in this active form of experimentation we have slowly and gradually also figured out that it’s ok to be different, it’s ok to be yourself.
