Comparing ourselves to others

Comparing ourselves to others is a habit of mind that we gradually adopt over life time for a variety of reasons. Such as getting promotion on the job, starting a business, we all need reference points to learn and grow, but all of this comes with a catch that we end up comparing ourselves to others.

Comparing ourselves to other has been derided by so many literature and other greats, that in fact it forms the most fundamental basis of our most cherished beliefs such as you are a unique snow flake, there is no other you, there is only one you, be yourself, do you etc.

Comparison is the death of joy!

Mark Twain

Comparing ourselves to others is fundamentally dangerous as it induces lack of sense of reality. Environments are so complicated, us dealing with so many factors at a time, even the most well told story, most detailed account is not complete , us looking to apply the same thinking, same pattern of behaviour over and over again, in the same measure; puts us in a trap the one from which we are never able to escape. It great impairs our ability to manoeuvre, find our path, respond to the greatest challenges of life in an effective manner, cause what we are relying on is essentially outdated information, it’s not grounded in present, but the wisdom of past which maybe anything but far from perfect for the current age always.
